BASF and Shell Chemicals will merge their polyethylene and polypropylene businesses, and the combined company has annual sales of more than $6 billion, making it one of the world’s largest manufacturers. This means that a new polyolefin giant will enter the market later this year. BASF and Shell have half the ownership of the new company. The deal will merge with Shell, a wholly-owned polypropylene firm of Shell, Targor, a BASF polypropylene joint venture (formerly Hoechst, later Celanese) and Elenac, BASF’s existing polyethylene joint venture with Shell. This merger will also give Shell a net profit of 1.25 million US dollars
