Serial Interface The serial interface provides a high-performance communication link. The protocol used for this communication is based on IBM Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC). The serial interface also supports a subset of the ISO HDLC (International Organization for Standardization Advanced Data Link Control) protocol. SDLC / HDLC has been accepted as a standard protocol by many advanced teleprocessing systems. The serial interface performs many functions that are required for the data link and does not require the 8044’s CPU intervention. The programmer only needs to care about the functionality of the 8044 without having to know the details of the communication process. The five pins associated with the serial interface on the 8044 are: PIN7 RTS / P16 PIN8 CTS / P17 PIN10 I / O / RXD / P30 PIN11 DATA / TXD / P31 PIN15 SCLK / T1 // P35 Figure 1 shows the serial interface components (SIU) functional block diagram, a detailed description of SIU hardware, see the second half of this chapter.
