刘祯的学术研究主要集中于戏曲历史与理论、目连戏与民间戏剧、昆曲研究、非物质文化遗产保护与批评等领域。在戏曲研究过程中,刘祯提出要建立一种民间戏曲的研究立场,还原其生存的文化空间;他认为中国的戏曲史,基本上是知识精英书写的历史,缺乏对民间戏曲的观照,应该还原戏剧史的另一面;并且,针对戏曲本体流失与批评失语等问题,提出中国的戏曲有着自身的独特魅力,应从本土理论中吸收有价值的资源,构建起符合民族艺术与民族文化特质的中国戏曲理论体系。刘祯的戏曲研究方法和观点,对中国戏曲研究产生重要影响。
