电弧炉炼钢使用的石墨电极,除端头的电气及机械损耗外,电极侧面会因高温高热炉气而被氧化损耗。由于电弧炉高负荷作业越来越普遍,电极侧面氧化损失所占的比例越来越大,严重地影响电极消耗量和冶炼成本,为此,首钢特殊钢公司—炼钢厂自1988年开始在7#和9#电弧炉(公称容量5吨,电极直径350豪米)上试用电极涂层新技术。经两年的试用,取得电极消耗平均吨钢降低0.5公斤以上的成效。
