A study conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Finnish National Institute of Public Health confirmed that vitamin E can reduce the incidence of prostate cancer in Finnish male smokers who participated in the trial. The Finnish α-tocopherol and β-carotene cancer prevention studies (known as the ATBC study) showed that the incidence of prostate cancer decreased by 32% when compared with those who did not take 50 mg of α-tocopherol. Alpha-tocopherol is the most important component of vitamin E. In addition, there was a 42% reduction in mortality among men receiving alpha-tocopherol during the trial. The dose of vitamin E used is approximately 3 times the amount recommended in the United States.
