Modern carbonate deposition is taking place in many areas of the world, such as the Bahamas Beach, the Gulf of Florida in the United States, the Bay of Bataan in Cuba, the Persian Gulf in the Middle East, and certain offshore parts of Denmark. The modern carbonate sediments produced in these sea areas are mainly composed of aragonite, followed by magnesium calcite, with fewer pure calcite and less modern dolomite sediments. The modern carbonate deposits in China are found in the coastal areas of South China Sea islands and Hainan Island. The authors have used powdery photography to identify the phases of modern sea-phase biological shells collected from more than 20 species of corals, petals, gastropods and foraminifera in the South China Sea and found that except for foraminifera and sea urchin shells, Magnesium calcite composition, the remaining biological shells are composed of aragonite.
