The placer gold deposits of the Tertiary Paleogene in the Yilgarn block in Western Australia, though of low grade, are, after all, the gold resources of the state. These ancient rivers, lying between 60 and 100 meters below the surface of the earth, are filled with loose gravel and clay and contain high salinity groundwater. Using open pit mining, underground mining and gold mining vessels and other methods are neither economical nor realistic. It is tentatively believed that in-situ leaching is the only method that could be successful in developing this resource at both technical and industrial scale. In 1985, BHP-Utah Minerals International started a laboratory and field feasibility study of in situ leaching of gold from this ancient channel.
