一、路透社在上海设立分社的由来 “九·一八”事变发生后,亚洲太平洋风云变色,引起全世界瞩目。正是在这样的背景下,英国的路透社和法国的哈瓦斯社联袂到上海设立分社。他们从各自不同利益出发,每日将东亚地区的政治、军事、经济以及文化方面的重大信息作为国际电讯发回各自的总社,同时这两家分社也把从总社收到的国际新闻译成中文,供给上海的中文报纸采用。1931年秋冬之际,路透社决定设立上海分社时,首要任务,就是物色能将英文译成中文的翻译人才。外国通讯社初来上海,人地生疏,要找到一位合适的人来主持中文编译部,是不太容易的。哈瓦斯社借助法租界工部局找到一位早年留学法国的学生张翼枢,没有遇到什么困难;路透社则几经波折,最后在它的华人职员中找到了伍特公便把主持中文部的重任落在伍的肩上。
