火花塞的工作原理是利用高压尖端放电作用而设计制造的,即火花塞在接通高压电路的瞬间时,在保持一定间隙距离(约0.7～0.8mm)的两电极间产生电火花,即由火花塞中心电极向侧极电极跳闪电火光,从而点燃发动机汽缸内的压缩可燃气体。
