《红豆》以倒叙的方式描述了中共女青年干部江玫重返母校工作,搬进大学的宿舍,因藏在墙上耶稣受难像后面暗洞里的两颗红豆而忆起1948年解放前夕,自己在革命与爱情之间的艰难抉择。全篇由三个年轻知识分子交织而出——江玫、齐虹、肖素,三人所代表的社会阶级不同,性格各异,以女主人公江枚的游离于另两人的抉择展现她的内心成长过程,由此,显现十七年文学在“双百方针”下,作家对文学的另一种探索——“革命与爱情”叙事模式,而往往在那个强调文艺为无产阶级政治服务、为工农兵服务,宣传政治文化的时代背景下,这样的爱情只能是悲剧命运。
