As the first country to give universal suffrage to women, the New Zealand women’s rights movement has made outstanding achievements. A sound and fair legal security system, a free and tolerant social policy environment, an active and orderly organization of women’s groups and feminist movements have given New Zealand women a high political, economic and social status. Reviewing the development of the New Zealand women’s rights movement is basically consistent with the overall evolution of the Western women’s rights movement, but at the same time shows its own characteristics of some stages of development because of its special historical and realistic social background. In an attempt to make some sort of classification, this article will explore New Zealand’s feminist movement in the form of “series waves.”
