APL’s new container ship design Superexpress APL shipping company, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Det Norske Veritas cooperation between the APL shipping companies will be more fuel-efficient new ships. According to Det Norske Veritas, the new hull design will allow APL Shipping’s 10 very large container ships to save about 20% of their fuel per container than existing designs deliver. The new design has optimized nine speed and draft combinations involving the Far East-Europe trade route. The optimized draft, speed and installed propulsion power will be reduced by approximately 16% compared to the original design. The first 13,800 TEU container ship is being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and will be delivered next year. Traditionally, container ships will spend a lot of time running at “off-design”
