When Stanford Raffles discovered Singapore in 1819, it was just a small fishing village of less than 200 people. It is the arrival of the British that has brought about a change in the social and economic fabric of this tropical island. Being located east-west intersection, Singapore is seen as an ideal port on the Indian-Chinese maritime trade route of East India Company. Its strategic location is fully utilized to promote the development of trade. Singapore was later turned into a free port and the re-export trade was so prosperous that it was described by Raffles as a “seven-ocean business center.” The importance of entrepot trade in Singapore’s history is unparalleled.
