In order to prevent catastrophic collisions with tanker ships or any other vessel, Dyneema fiber was used by the Royal Schelde Dutch shipyard for a full-size crash test in June 1995. A specially designed barge fitted with structural plates of composite material rushes onto a rock that mimics the beach, and the structure is still watertight. This test shows that the Dyneema structure provides the extra protection needed for the bottom and hold of such ships. This test uses a new design of the bottom structure that is very easy to fit on any existing tanker. This 465mm thick bottom is made from the bottom of the boat and two 2.5mm overlapped Dyneema fibreboards placed 40cm behind the floor.
