青藏铁路西宁至拉萨全长1956公里, 其中西宁至格尔木814公里已于1979年铺通,1984年投入运营。新开工修建的青藏铁路格尔木至拉萨段, 北起青海省格尔木市,经纳赤台、五道梁、沱沱河、雁石坪、翻越唐古拉山,再经西藏自治区安多、那曲、当雄、羊八井,抵达西藏自治区首府拉萨市,全长1142公里,其中新建铁路(南山口至拉萨)1110公里,格尔木至南山口32公里为既有线。青藏铁路穿越海拔4000米以上地段达 960公里,最高点为海拔5072米的唐古拉山垭口,被誉为“离天最近的铁路”。未来5年两藏将迎来铁路建设史上的第二个高潮,青藏铁路东西两条延伸线拉萨至日喀则和拉萨至林芝铁路将在十一五规划初期开工建设,全长约700公里。
Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Xining to Lhasa, a total length of 1956 km, of which 814 km Xining to Golmud pave the way in 1979, put into operation in 1984. The two east-west extension lines of Qinghai-Tibet Railway will start construction from the Lhasa to Shigatse and from Lhasa to Nyingchi in the initial stage of the 11th five-year plan. The total length will be about 700 kilometers.
