It has long been known that there are major biosynthesis and decomposition pathways of intermediate metabolism in mammalian kidneys. Metabolic differences between the renal cortex and the medulla remind one to think that the enzymes that are distributed along the nephron will also vary, and these qualitative data were originally provided by histochemistry. Due to the development of microdissection and quantitative micro-chemistry it is possible to obtain accurate data on the distribution of enzymes in the nephron and to refine these data by determining the rate-limiting enzyme activity in the main metabolic pathway. Knowledge of the precise positioning of enzymes in the nephron helps to better understand the drugs in the kidneys
