The earthquake in Mexico City in 1985 was unique in many ways. Its ground motion is unique in terms of strength, regularity, frequency composition and duration. In historically recorded ground motions, there is no record of acceleration response spectrum with a damping value of 5% in the 2.0-second period as high as 1.17g (peak ground acceleration is 0.2g). The construction of the city of Mexico caused a very serious disaster: 210 buildings collapsed, thousands of buildings were destroyed, and thousands lost their lives. This report describes the characteristics of the earthquake, describes its ground movements, the typical consequences of Mexico City, analyzes its statistical data, and draws preliminary conclusions concerning the provisions of the building codes and related issues.
