In the past few years, we have made great strides in understanding the biological and functional importance of the human tumor somatostatin receptor (SSTR). The somatostatin analogue octreotide can successfully control hormone hypersecretion and control tumor growth in patients with acromegaly and benign and malignant glandular cell tumors. Somatostatin receptor imaging (SRS) visualizes the in vivo appearance of breast cancer on the cell surface after binding to octreotide. The clinical outcome of tamoxifen in combination with somatostatin and its analogs is not superior to tamoxifen alone in patients with advanced breast cancer. The authors review the role of SSTR in the development of breast cancer.
