“Purple Color” is the representative of American African American writer Alice Walker. The novel not only expresses its recognition of “the root of Africa ”, but also reflects the alienation of Africa’s foreign state. Therefore, Alice Walker’s national consciousness presents the contradictory nature of both ethnicity and Americanization. This ambivalent national consciousness shows that Walker’s search for “the root of Africa ” is an effort to fight for the rights of African Americans to speak in mainstream discourse, to seek equal social status, and to coexist in the United States’ multiculturalism .
