王士禛作为康熙时期最有影响的诗人,不仅在歌创作上标举神韵,而且形成了一套系统的诗歌理论,这套理论成为当时的主流诗学,其门人和弟子将其概括为“神韵说”。“神韵说”在当时指导了一批诗人的创作。“神韵”是在中国古典诗歌发展过程中积淀的独特的艺术品质,是一种追求缥缈、自然、清远、典雅的美学倾向。“神韵”作为中国古典诗歌的一种独特的审美标准由来已久,钟嵘的《诗品》、司空图的《二十四诗品》和严羽的《沧浪诗话》都对“神韵说”的最终形成和系统化有重要影响。
