在中国文学传统理念中,诗歌、四书五经等经世之诗文一向被誉为典雅正宗文学。“小说”这一文学体裁直到明清时代方有一定的价值体现。如在明·徐渭的《曲序》中有这样的记载:“李梦阳将《西厢记》与《离骚》并称。”明中后期,袁宏道、汤显祖、冯梦龙等创作的戏曲小说大量问世,打破的文学传统的体裁束缚,促进了民间通俗文学的发展,才使小说戏剧的价值得到体认。
