苗族的蔑编,从技艺精度上可分为粗编与精编。粗编主要为日常生活所编,工艺水准以结实为上。而精编则显出技术高超洒脱,往往多为礼仪、审美、实用等多方面所需而多功能化。苗族的马尾斗笠具有典型的礼仪、审美化特征,是苗族人民世代由箬叶斗笠、棕片斗笠逐渐创新发展而形成的。导致马尾斗笠由实用化向仪式化、精品化转换的内因是苗族的婚俗,这是一个反映苗族古代社会由嫁男到嫁女,即由母系制社会向男系制社会转型的化石物证。
