Marcus was born in Montreal in 1923 (Canada). He holds a Bachelor of Science and a PhD from McGill University in Montreal. In 1951, he was a professor at Brooklyn Institute of Technology in New York State, and in 1964 he was a physicochemical professor at the University of Illinois. He has been a professor of chemistry at Arthur Amherst Noyes at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena since 1978. Marcus said he decided to relocate to the United States in 1949. He has won numerous science awards, including the 1984 Wolf Prize for Chemistry. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences says the 69-year-old Markus was awarded the prize because “he contributed to the theory of electron transfer reactions in chemicals.”
