In Moldova’s parliamentary election held in February 2001, the Moldovan Communist Party received 70% of parliamentary seats. Under the constitutional amendment of 2000, the President of Moldova has been replaced by the parliamentary election from the original universal suffrage. In this way, Vladimir Voronin, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, was successfully elected President of Moldova in the April 2001 parliamentary presidential election. Moldova became the first country in the former Soviet republics to be re-elected by the Communist Party after the Soviet Union was dissolved. It is Voronin that led the Communists to complete a major political force from the illegal organization of the early days of the Republic’s independence to Moldovan politics and then from the opposition party to the ruling party.
