The battle of the Soviet-German battlefields of World War II was well-known for its protracted and violent military struggles. It was during this war that Soviet troops and peaceful inhabitants suffered tremendous human losses. The scope and scale of this loss is one of the important topics of concern and research by Soviet and Russian historians. Different materials and methods lead to different statistical results, triggering a heated discussion and confrontation. Although it is hard to be sure which one of the statistics is the most accurate, the concern and study on this issue involves a series of major issues, such as how to view the cruelty of the war, the price paid by the Soviet people, and the close connection between history and reality.
