Although Hawthorne’s classic passage on Romance was often used as evidence of the definition of Romance by successive generations of critics, this article draws on the theoretical achievements of the New Historicism study and his deep description of literary imagination and human feelings contained in the rational and cultural tradition of the United States , Argues that in these passages, Hawthorne instead hides Hawthorne’s desire to establish an independent and free literary imagination in order to reduce the danger of confrontation with mainstream culture. On the contrary, in other passages that are not often mentioned, Hawthorne established the essence of Romance and restored the authority of literary imagination and determined the principle and dignity of literary creation.
