As long as it is effective to measure the seismic velocity and attenuation in the rock under realistic conditions, efforts should be made to “explain” the results. The most imperfect formulation is the conclusion that attenuation and velocity are linear functions of frequency over the experimental error range. A more complete method is to select a pair of related functions to fit the attenuation and velocity data in order to describe the wave propagation in the causal medium. However, this is still a curve fit. As a result, most decay-diffusions can produce unreasonable results when extrapolated to high or low frequencies.
