The European Space Agency (ESA) considers it necessary to launch a research effort to define the definition of an airborne imaging spectrometer. This onboard imaging spectrometer should be considered a pioneer of the spaceborne “Process Research Space Imaging Mission” (PRISM). This research effort includes the identification of an Airborne PRISM Experiment (APEX) that will contribute to the development, calibration, validation, simulation and application of the PRISM mission. The APEX instrument is defined as a push-broom imager with 1000 pixels in the direction of the orbit and 200 user-selectable spectral bands in the wavelength range 450nm to 2500nm. The complete APEX system will include an aircraft, navigation data, in-flight and in-flight calibration and data archiving and processing equipment.
