English Dash has a variety of functions. In the past, its research mainly came from rhetorical, syntactic, pragmatic and discourse perspectives, and more to explore its specific functions, but less to explore why from the perspective of cognitive linguistics Dash can produce such a function. In this paper, the rhetorical function of English dash is taken as the research object. Based on the graph-background theory of cognitive linguistics, the dissertation explores the cognitive mechanism hidden behind its rhetorical function: people tend to turn the things they want to be highlighted into or strengthen Graphic highlighting. This article argues that the rhetorical effect arises during this process of highlighting.
