1997年早春的微寒,夏季的清凉,尤其长时间的秋阳高照为德国葡萄带来了难得的能酿造顶尖级葡萄酒的好年景,特别是瑞思苓这样的晚熟葡萄酒品种更是享尽天时之利。优质高级葡萄酒的产量甚至超过了近10年中1990和1993这两个以出产顶尖级葡萄酒著名的好年成。根据德国联邦统计局提供的统计数据,1997年的年产量为8.5万吨,产量比平均年产量10.2万吨低,但是质量水平却大大高出平均水平。德国酒学会证实,大约6万吨的葡萄酒达到了优质高级葡萄酒的等级标准(优质高级葡萄酒生产量的比例一般为30%左右)。特别出色的好葡萄酒是优质高级中的头等酒,迟采级酒和精选酒。特别值得一提的是,为了酿造特别的冰酒,许多酒农们没有在12月中旬采摘冰果,而是一直等到1998年1月底才收获葡萄,使冰酒的天然糖份含量高达180度Oechsle(oechsle是葡萄天然糖份含量单位)。
