Objective To investigate the characteristics of heart rate variability (HRV) in type 2 diabetic patients and the effect of captopril on it. Methods One hundred and ten patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were examined 24h dynamic electrocardiogram and compared with 50 normal people. 110 cases of type 2 diabetes were randomly divided into routine treatment group and captopril group; captopril group on the basis of conventional therapy plus captopril treatment, observed 1, 3 and 6 months after treatment HRV changes . Results The indexes of HRV in type 2 diabetic patients were significantly different from those in normal controls. Captopril group 3 to 6 months after treatment, heart rate variability in the frequency domain and time domain indicators were significantly improved. Conclusions Patients with type 2 diabetes have lower HRV and impaired autonomic function. Captopril can improve autonomic function.
