近代,常熟萧氏家族恪守“不以叱咤风云的政治显赫而彰扬于外”的祖训,坦然处事,藏而不露。萧氏藏书楼——“晨星楼”亦不显山露水,当时的主人是萧阮生(1838年―1921年)。萧阮生名嗣宗,字阮生,晚号院僧。少敦行,嗜学,清附贡生。“其教育乡里,束脩岁积,约己厚人,临财廉而任事勇,乐助好施,善名颇著”(见《常熟萧君暨吴孺人墓志铭》,张謇撰,吴昌硕篆盖,萧蜕书丹,赵古泥刻)。萧阮生中年丧妻,鳏居终身,晚年杜门不出20余年,喜抄书,培养出以诗文称著乡里的萧麟征(谷士)、以书法誉满江左的萧嶙(蜕庵)及藏书家萧盅友(冲
