In response to Chen’s Thought on Sandell’s Republican Morality, Sandel pointed out that politics should not be separated from ethics and politics should be related to the development of personal virtue, which can be seen as the consensus between the Confucian tradition and the republican tradition . In this sense, Sandel accepts Chen’s criticism, and at the same time he also asks Chen questions, including how Confucianism understands the relationship between political activities and personal virtue. In a concluding response to the international symposium on “China’s Sandral and Chinese Philosophy,” Sander elucidated four topics that his research may involve in Confucian tradition: the reflection of the prevailing Western “selfless” Concepts, concepts of good life, politics and virtue, and natural issues. Sandal argues that cross-cultural dialogue in the academic field can move forward from the current “comparative dialogues” to “cooperative dialogues,” and he expects both parties to the dialogue to step deeper into the texts and each other’s traditional ideology.
