The myostatin (MSTN) gene plays a negative role in the regulation of skeletal muscle formation and differentiation in pigs, hindering the growth of muscle cells and myofibers, and the loss or decrease of this gene can cause over-development of muscle in the animal body. It also has an important relationship with individual growth, development and fat deposition of pigs. It can be used to improve and regulate the individual development of pigs and the proportion of lean meat and fat. This review summarizes the biological functions of MSTN gene and its related research progress, such as the structure, characteristics, mechanism of action, interaction and interaction of MSTN gene, and provides reference for raising the growth rate of livestock and poultry, meat yield, meat quality and cultivating new strains in the future.
