Objective To investigate the changes of serum trace elements iron, copper and zinc in patients with newly diagnosed PKU and the relationship with hyperphenylalanine. Methods The contents of iron, copper and zinc in serum of 27 PKU children and 42 normal children were determined by spectrophotometry. The concentrations of phenylalanine in serum were determined by HPLC, and the two were compared. Results Serum iron and zinc in children with PKU were significantly lower than those in normal controls, but there was no significant difference in serum copper. Serum zinc levels in patients with phenylalanine concentration. Conclusion There is a lack of trace elements in children with PKU. It is necessary to add trace elements in treatment to achieve better therapeutic effect.
