Objective To investigate the corneal expression of fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and its receptors in various diseases and its possible role. Methods A total of 32 corneal specimens resected during corneal transplantation were collected and 11 normal peripheral corneas were collected. Frozen sections were examined by immunohistochemistry bFGF and its receptor flg and integrin ανβ3. The lesion tissue expression intensity and clinical performance were compared. Results The expression of bFGF in all and flg was positive in most corneal and diseased corneal specimens. The expression of bFGF was stronger in corneal epithelium or stromal than that in normal cornea (p <0.05), while ανβ3 was only expressed in diseased cornea. The expression of bFGF was positively correlated with the degree of corneal opacity in infiltrating cells and proliferating tissues, and positively correlated with neovascularization in proliferating tissues and neovasculants (p <0.05). Conclusion The corneas of all kinds of lesions express bFGF and its receptors, which may play an important role in corneal injury repair and neovascularization.
