In August 1912, G.E. Morrison, a well-known journalist with The Times in Beijing, resigned as a reporter and was Yuan Shikai’s offer to become the Beijing government adviser under his leadership. The reason why Morrison switched to the political arena from the uncrowned king rarely discussed the academic circles. Some scholars think that Morrison’s resignation is mainly due to financial pressure and other complicated reasons, but there is no detailed description. This article argues that Morrison’s abandonment of news occupation politics includes both internal causes of his desire to accomplish great undertakings and various external causes of the circumstances at that time, as a result of the combined effect of internal and external causes. Except for two factors of his own character and his feelings toward the Chinese people, the external factors that caused Morrison to resign are at least the following: 1. To make good with Yuan Shikai. 2, long-term discord with the newspaper boss. 3, job burnout journalists. 4, disease-ridden, financially distressed, about to become a family.
