At present, the practical design of electrical and electronic systems for submarines in the United States is actually independent of each other. Such practices have limited the advantages of capitalizing on the advances made in technology over the past few decades. In order to maximize the capabilities of the submarine platform, the traditional systems with similar processing and communication requirements must be integrated. This article explores and analyzes one possible implementation called the FIFT C ~ 3I system, which integrates all the major electrical and electronic systems that support submarine missions. Such a system must be fault tolerant so that the reliability, availability and security of the integrated system equal or exceed the existing system to be replaced. The advantages of this method are numerous and can be achieved with existing techniques and components.
