网络的发展之快是出乎许多人意料之外的,它以迅雷不及掩耳之势席卷世界的各个领域,当然也包括出版业。然而中国出版界的最大痼疾却是仍抹不去浓重的计划经济的痕迹,出版与发行脱钩、信息渠道不畅通、许多编辑对电脑、网络怀有恐惧症等等。网络文化公司在此种形势下应运而生,它把网络与出版有机地结合成一体,在短小的时空里,使图书迅速地占领市场。有人称此类公司为“中介媒体”或“多功能的作者”。
