Objective To study the effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on sex hormone levels in male patients with epilepsy. Methods The levels of serum testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), and sex hormone in male patients with epilepsy and untreated AEDs were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immuno-radiometric assay (IRMA) Globulin (SHBG), estradiol (E2), interstitial cell stimulating hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. Results Compared with the control group, the untreated group had no significant difference in each index. Compared with the control group, the FT level was significantly decreased and the SHBG level was significantly increased in each untreated group. The E2 level was increased in the phenytoin sodium group. However, the levels of TT, LH and FSH were not significantly different between groups. Conclusion AEDs can affect sex hormones in male patients with epilepsy.
