To investigate the effects of silica (SiO 2) on macrophages, two groups of purified mouse peritoneal macrophages were observed under scanning electron microscopy to observe the changes of cell surface ultrastructure. Results: ① With the different culture time and cell function status, the two groups of cells showed different shapes and a series of ultrastructural changes on the surface. ② SiO 2 macrophages began phagocytosis of dust within 5 minutes, 48 hours after degeneration, inactivation and collapse. The response of macrophages to SiO 2 dust particles and the morphological changes during phagocytosis were observed. The results showed that the rapid death of macrophages and the changes of the ultrastructure of the surface were related to the toxic effects of SiO 2 dust on macrophages.
