The 5th International Neonatal Hearing Screening Conference was held from May 31 to June 3, 2006 at the VillaErba Conference Center on Lake Como in northern Italy. The theme of the conference was “Beyond Newborn Hearing Screening: Infant and Childhood Auditory Science and Clinical Practice. ” The International Newborn Hearing Screening Conference is being held every two years since 1998. More than 600 delegates from 66 countries attended the conference and exchanged views on the conference. The conference received about 600 papers (including oral communication and exhibition board exchange). The meeting was chaired by Professor Ferdi-nando Grandrand of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Milan and chaired by Deborah Hayes, Denver Children’s Hospital, Colorado, USA. Recalling the theme “Beyond Early Detection and Intervention: Hearing Science and Clinical Practice in Infants and Toddlers,” of the 4th International Symposium on Newborn Hearing (2004), the themes of the two meetings are relevant and different. The key words for both international conferences were “beyond,” the former (2004) “Beyond Early Detection and Intervention,” and the latter (2006) “Beyond Newborn Hearing Screening.” It seems that “surpassing” may be the mainstream trend of the development of infant and child hearing science in various countries in the world for quite some time now and in the future. It is also a direction and an idea. How to seize the opportunities and challenges in our country’s clinical hearing sciences, otolaryngology, pediatrics, perinatology, rehabilitation medicine and pedagogy and how to catch up with the domestic work so as to catch up with the international standards in a relatively short period of time This is a major practical issue that we think together. To catch up is necessary to be good at learning, to learn about the concept of newborn (infants and young children) hearing screening in the modern world, technical developments, intervention strategies, audiology and its development, and social and family modalities. To this end, the magazine organized experts on the 5th International Symposium on Neonatal Hearing Screening compilation, and will be published in 2007 issue 1 to 6 consecutive issues. The journal warmly welcomes the relevant academic community to actively participate in the discussion and exchange of the topic and provide relevant manuscripts to further promote the newborn hearing screening work in depth.
