Delilah: Hey Sean, What do you know about 1)Euthanasia?
Sean: Hmmm…I don’t know much. ①I guess I’ve heard that youth in some Asian countries have a pretty hard go of it.
Delilah: No, that is not what I’m talking about. I don’t mean young people in the 2)continent of Asia. I mean the act of assisted suicide or mercy killing, referred to as Euthanasia.
Sean: Sorry. Never heard of it…
Delilah: You’ve gotta be kidding! ②Doctor assisted suicide has been a hot-button topic for years. And the debate actually dates back to ancient times.
Sean: Well, how come I’ve never heard of it before?
Delilah: ③Maybe ’cuz you’ve got your head in the sand, or somewhere else the sun don’t shine…
Sean: Alright, I get what you’re implying and I don’t appreciate it. Sorry I’m not as up-to-date on current events as you are.
Delilah: You should be sorry. This issue is right up there with abortion, surrogacy and the death penalty. It’s one of the most pressing issues facing modern society.
Sean: But if it’s such a modern issue, how can it be so old at the same time?
Delilah: You need to trace it back to its roots to understand.
Sean: I sense a history lesson coming on…
Delilah: Translated from Greek, the word basically means “good death” or, more accurately, the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to relieve pain and suffering.
Sean: So it’s murder, but for a good cause!
Delilah: Well, the Roman historian Suetonius described how the Emperor Augustus, “dying quickly and without suffering in the arms of his wife, Livia, experienced the ‘euthanasia’ he had wished for.”
Sean: So basically he died quick, with little suffering. Is that what it means?
Delilah: It’s a big part of it. But the idea of doctors being involved was brought up in the 17th century by Francis Bacon, who described Euthanasia as giving a painless, happy death to one’s patient. He’s actually quoted as saying it’s a“physician’s responsibility to 3)alleviate the ‘physical sufferings’ of the body.”
Sean: OK. So does it still mean the same thing today? Delilah: Pretty much. The Oxford English Dictionary, which I personally 4)ascribe to, calls it “the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an 5)irreversible 6)coma,”
Sean: But what about doctors or families who have 7)ulterior motives?
Delilah: ④Good question, but that’s a whole other can of worms…
