航运是三峡工程的主要效益之一。2003以后,随着三峡蓄水对通航条件的改善,长江2838公里干线航道按照“深下游、畅中游、延上游”思路加快整治,内河通航基础设施建设加快进行,至目前,长江沿江已有一类水运口岸22个,4个亿吨和16个千万吨级港口,长江水系内河航道通航里程已达6.5万公里,长江运能相当于40条京广线。长江水系水运货运量和货物周转量分别占流域全社会运量的16.4%和67.8%,沿江所需85%的铁矿石、83%的电煤和85%的外贸货物依托长江水运来保障,产业向沿江地区集聚的趋势十分明显。事实证明,三峡水库蓄水有力地促进了长江航运事业的发展。
