1956年9月1日,这是我一生难忘的日子。从这天起,我告别了讲坛生涯,走上了图书馆工作岗位,与书结下了不解之缘。我的前任,因有新的工作等着她,仅花了一天多的时间就把11711册图书向我作了突击性的点交。至于怎样管、如何借等最起码的业务常识也未及详细介绍。上岗的第四天,处主任来馆察看,临走时顺便问了问什么时候借书,我不知当时怎么会信口说出“明天”二字。现在忆想起来,这回话实在太唐突了。因为我刚刚跨进图书馆的大门,对图书还一点儿不熟悉,何况对首次借书的压力更没有丁点儿的体会呢。事实正是如此,开借的第一天,我被出纳台前里外三层的读者群吓住了。那时,我还没有组织读者有序借书的办法,同时,因对图书的排架不熟.书名的生疏弄得手足无措。找一本书少则四五分钟,多则……难怪从读者群里不时传来责难的话语。幸好,一些等得不耐烦的读者先后失望地离去,出纳的压力减小了,我被“解放”了。

Fortunately, some impatient readers wait to leave disappointedly, and the cashier’s pressure has been reduced. I was “liberated”.
