Recently, well-known U.S. companies such as Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft formed alliances with civil rights organizations to submit joint letters calling on the U.S. government to substantially increase the transparency of its surveillance programs. The coalition includes 63 companies, investors, non-profit organizations and trade organizations. Its July 19th letter shows that it will call on both U.S. President Barack Obama and Congressional leaders to allow Internet, telephone and Web service providers to publish more specifically their national security-related information requests. Specifically, what they require to be published on a regular basis includes: the number of times the government requests user information; the number of individuals, accounts or devices involved in obtaining information; and the number of requests for communications, user profiles, and other information.
