The annual World Earth Day, a common holiday for all people living on Earth, is approaching. It is more widely and commonly celebrated than either the Spring Festival or the Christmas. Although some people now pay little attention to this holiday, the meaning and significance of it will be highlighted and recognized by people as time moves on.
We have only one Earth in the universe which people can actually rely on to thrive. Earth is the mother of mankind and the shared homeland for us. She has raised tens of billions of offspring (including those who died) with her beautiful body, elegant environment and rich nutrition. The development of people from ape man, who lived only in tropical forest with no significant difference from other animals a few million years ago, to homo sapiens now spreading across the world with a number of 7 billion and who dominate the world, embodies the upbringing of earth mother.
Not only does the Earth nurture human, but also thousands of other organisms (microorganisms, plants, and animal) who make up the life community together with humankind.
Without them, humankind will become the regal isolationist, difficult to survive. However, the population expansion intensified the plundering of earth's resources and destruction of the natural environment thus disrupting the ecological balance, and threatening other life sustenance. This makes the mother earth turn old and exhausted gradually. Land, on which people rely to thrive, blue sky and clean water, which people are accustomed to enjoy, are becoming redients so scare and luxury, not to mention valuable resources as gold, silver, copper, iron, etc. Despite this, the earth mother, like all of the mothers, would rather have experienced years of wind and frost, be broken by care, hence maintaining the most viable family in the universe and wished her offspring to get better and better; only pushed to the utmost limits of endurance, would she get angry and punish her subjects strictly in a way, such as tempest, earthquake, volcano, etc!
As the offspring of the earth, we must for the sake of the mother's health and longevity, celebrate the World Earth Day as the birthday of the Earth. To protect mother earth is our shared duty and responsibility. While human extort from the Earth and damage the environment, we also have the obligation to protect the environment and the ability to restore the environment. Many cases have proved that barren land through human adornment and trimming can turn to paradises filled with flowers and trees. There is no need to complain or overly pessimistic, because the history of mankind is actually a history of continuous coordination with nature. We solve problems when they come. Meanwhile, we will adjust ourselves constantly in the process of solving problems and adapt to the environment. Starting from myself with an effective action speaks louder than a dozen words of excitement.
In this issue of "Knowledge is Power" magazine before the 46th World Earth Day, we reveal the relations between the gradual disappearance of northern slope of Mount Everest Bing Talin wonders with global warming, as well as the efforts China made in the treatment of air pollution, desertification, soil contamination etc. Melting glaciers is a alarm sounding to remind everyone to restrain our behavior as much as possible. We should begin from details in daily life so as to reduce waste and live a green life. Active and effective efforts should be made to save energy and reduce emission. Otherwise, we are contributing to the worse situation of global warming. Meanwhile, we are appealing science sector counterparts to be committed to display the ongoing environmental governance in scientific community so that more people can understand them. Perhaps our effort is rather limited compared to the destruction already made, but it reflects that we are moving in a positive way forward.
"We have only one Earth," till today, the slogan is still not a bubble.
