Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is characterized by autoantibodies to certain islet cell antigens, including glutamate decarboxylase. The authors sought to determine whether proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) is associated with insulin-dependent diabetes in response to glutamate decarboxylase. The authors studied newly diagnosed patients with IDDM, relatives of diabetic patients with and without islet cell autoantibodies (ICA), and mononuclear cells from peripheral blood of randomly selected healthy controls. The results show that mononuclear cells produce positive for recombinant glutamate decarboxylase antigens
