During the transitional period, the democratically elected grass-roots villages in China’s rural areas have drawn much attention from the academic circles. The academic circles examine this issue from the angles of rural governance, institutional changes and political democracy respectively. However, these surveys overlook an important dimension: the theme of rural publicity. The author believes that this theme is the essence and meaning of rural elections. Through the case studies on the village public affairs such as the election of Y village and the road repairing, the author examines the current relationship between village election and village public production, village public consensuses and consensus. The article holds that the current grass-roots rural areas still inherit the differential-order public productive mode . This inherent tension between this model of public sex production and the model of production publicity through election operations is precisely the tension that led to attempts to reach village consensus and consensus through western elections in the context of the reconstruction of contemporary rural public practice To the question.
