In this paper, the effect of notch size on the low-temperature fracture behavior of low carbon steel was studied. The fracture characteristics near the temperature T_C ~ * (called cold-brittle feature temperature) corresponding to the fracture load valley were analyzed. Combining the engineering design features, The concept of critical notch (crack) size α_C and its characteristic value α_C ~ * is recommended as a basic characteristic parameter to control cold embrittlement. The mathematical expressions of α_C and α_C ~ * are deduced in this paper. The feasibility of this formula is validated by the simulated test data under static and fatigue loads.
